Blood donation ad campaign: Quirky ad campaign draws more donors to blood center
Blood donation centers have consistently relied on urgent public pleas or somber ads when donations are running low. The Blood Center of Central Texas has found success with a different approach: a series of humorous television ads built around the concept that people can redeem themselves by donating blood.

The ad campaign helped prompt a 20 percent increase in donations during its first run, which ran late March through mid-April. The ads are scheduled to start again the week of May 25 and run until the end of July. For more information regarding the ad campaign, click here.

Keep Austin Loud: Rock-n-Roll Benefit Honors Blood Center
World Gone Mad Drum Corps, Austin’s own brass and percussion rock band, hosted a benefit concert on May 16 in honor of The Blood and Tissue Center of Central Texas. Founder

of World Gone Mad Drum Corps, Mike Reynolds, organized the rock-n-roll extravaganza to give back to the community. In 2006, Reynolds had a life-threatening experience and underwent 15 hours of emergency surgery, receiving a supply of blood equal to 45 individual donations. As a whole, the blood amount was enough to support three healthy adults. With the help of their rock star comrades, the members of Austin’s loudest drum corps raised $2,796.

For more information about Keep Austin Loud, please contact Mike Reynolds at keepaustinloud@mac.com or visit the Keep Austin Loud website.

UT Grad student in Environmental Engineering, Jeremiah Mangold was the winner of the $1000 HEB Gift Card. Jeremiah donated at the APO week-long spring blood drive. He saw the bus and got on board to save a life. Since his family lives out of the area, Jeremiah says the gift card will probably be used for gas. He was definitely shocked and surprised at winning! Staff members Shannon and Dolly are pictured with him just after they presented him with the gift card.

Obama meets with Gabriel George, Hutto boy and Blood Center Spokesperson, about sickle cell disease
Gabriel George doesn't spend time feeling sorry for himself. The 10-year-old Hutto boy — who is the national poster child for the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America — plays violin and enjoys Hot Wheels. He reads, rides his bike and takes pictures with his digital camera. And occasionally, he meets with the president. Last week, Gabriel, his mother and sickle cell advocates visited President Barack Obama in the Oval Office to discuss the disease. Click here for the full story!

Heroes For Life was a success!

The Blood Center celebrated the many Heroes For Life who do their part to ensure that the community has a safe and stable supply of blood. Check out pictures below and click here to see the winners! Esther’s Follies’ own Shannon Sedwick opened the annual Heroes for Life event with her zany rendition of “She’s Got You” as the unforgettable Patsy Cline. She then performed the MC duties as “Patsy” and acknowledged the 2008 honorees and presented awards to Blood Drive Coordinators recognizing landmark years of service, Hands of the Group category winners, and donors who reached landmark gallon levels in blood donation.

The highlight of the event was the remarks made by three local recipients who shared their stories of how important blood donation is in their lives. Recipients included Dr. Homer Goehrs, APD Training Officer Dave Erskine, and Trevor and Robin Eissler with their 5 year-old son Oliver.

The around 800 guests also toured the Center’s vehicles – bloodmobile, trailer and van, and Honda Element; visited the High 5 Online Store display; and entered a raffle drawing to win several great prizes including a 32” Flat Screen LCD HDTV.

Thanks to all those who attended and special thanks to the financial sponsors of the event:
Freescale - M. H. Crockett Properties, Inc. - Applied Materials - URS Corporation

A 25 Gallon Donor is Celebrated!

The Blood Center thanks Round Rock resident Jan MacKay for her donation of 25 gallons! Inspired by her father, an avid blood donor, Jan began to donate blood in 1990 (when the promise of a free doughnut was very appealing!) To read the amazing profile of Jan in the Austin American Statesman, click here.

Four 10-year olds ask for contributions to The Blood Center instead of presents

L-R: Colista, Alexa, and Eliza*
*Ruth not pictured
The Blood Center of Central Texas relies on the support of community members to provide necessary educational and outreach programs to grow the number of blood donations each year. Four 10-year-olds put new meaning to The Center’s anthem of Life is in your hands.

Eliza, Alexa, Colista, and Ruth each have a birthday in May. This year, for their 10th birthdays, the four friends celebrated together and asked for financial contributions in lieu of presents. Instead of buying a gift for each birthday girl, attendees donated $180 to The Blood Center.

These fourth graders understand the importance of blood donation and all plan to donate blood when they are old enough. Colista’s uncle was in a helicopter accident and now when her mother donates blood, she shares her cookies with her daughter. Eliza and Alexa say, “It is better to think of other people and not just yourself.” Each hopes to continue helping others – Colista wants to be a nanny or kindergarten teacher, Eliza wants to be a dolphin trainer (or a professional soccer player), and Alexa hopes to be a veterinarian or a writer of stories.

A very special thanks to our young contributors! These little ladies really do understand that Life is in their hands.

Congratulations to the two Friends for Life laptop winners!
Friends for Life is a summer blood donation initiative encouraging individuals who donate blood during the school year at high schools to also give blood during the summer. Two high school seniors saved lives and won a laptop with their donations!

Stephanie, a high school senior at Anderson High, donated blood this summer during The Blood Center's Friends for Life extravaganza. Encompassing mulitiple drives over the summer months, Friends for Life mobile drives collected valuable blood donations which often wane in the summer months.

Stephanie donated blood at Dave & Buster's - she saved two lives AND won a laptop. She is on the swim team and plans to attend college in the D.C. area following graduation in May.

Stephanie is pictured at Anderson High School with Leslie Bailey, the Get a Grip Account Executive who coordinated high school blood drives. For more information, check out the Get a Grip high school drive website by clicking here.

Tracy, a high school senior at McNeil High, saved two lives when she donated blood at Austin Park and Pizza. She learned about blood donation at school and was ready to donate before she was 17!

Tracy is very excited about her new laptop - the night before she was notified that her name was selected, she had been shopping for a laptop online! Tracy plans to attend ACC next year and major in Sign Language and minor in Child Development. When asked why she donates blood, Tracy says, "It seemed like the right thing to do. I love helping people."
