Blood and Tissue Facts
1 in 3 people will need blood at some point in their lifetimes. Every day, Central Texans need blood transfusions for a variety of injuries and diseases, including cancer, aplastic anemia, sickle cell anemia, car accidents, heart surgery, bleeding ulcer, and hip replacement surgery. A car accident victim can require up to 50 units of blood!
Approximately 1 million tissue transplants are performed annually. One tissue donor can save or enhance the lives of more than 100 recipients. Tissue donations can be used to avert or correct blindness, replace cancerous bone, repair heart defects, prevent the need for amputation, and save the lives of burn patients. The Tissue Center of Central Texas provides tissue to 45 hospitals in 22 Texas counties. Between 2005 and 2006, there was a 65% increase in Central Texas families who consented to tissue donation!
